For over twenty years, I’ve successfully advocated for and virgorously defended the legal rights of my clients. My reputation precedes me and my name can certainly be heard to “ring out” in the courtrooms and communities wherein I practice. Most of my clients over the years become repeat clients and said clients typically honor me by recommending me to their friends, family and co-workers. I am known as a formidable advocate who fiercely fights for my clients while maintaining professionalism, poise and respect. In addition, my dry sense of humor and my ability to keep myself and my clients calm in the inherently stressful environment of litigation typically enables my clients and I to have a little fun along with way. I believe confidence is only built by experience and I am quite confidence in my ability to serve your legal needs.

My Journey Through The Legal Profession

After earning my law degree in Columbus, Ohio, I began my career as a public defender in Franklin County, Ohio, a jurisdiction of over one million residents, where I gained invaluable courtroom experience handling serious and complex criminal matters. I went on to manage my own law firm in Columbus, OH, before returning home to Charleston to work in insurance defense, representing major clients such as Wal-Mart, AIG Insurance, and the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

In 2013, driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to have direct oversight of my clients and cases, I opened the doors of Matthew M. Johnson, Attorney at Law. As a sole practitioner, I focus on Family Law, Personal Injury, General Civil Litigation, and Criminal Defense. Over the years I’ve developed strong relationships with local judges, court staff, and fellow attorneys across Kanawha and surrounding counties.

I don’t believe in sugarcoating. When you come to me with a legal issue, you’ll receive a clear, honest, and unvarnished assessment of your options. Too many attorneys make unrealistic promises just to earn your business—I won’t. I’d rather lose a client than accept their hard-earned money under false pretenses.

While I don’t like to lose and my clients are typically quite satisfied with my representation and the results I obtain on their behalf, I define success not by ego or playing the “tough guy”, but by securing the best possible outcome for each client. That may mean taking your case to trial and fighting for a favorable jury verdict, or negotiating a strategic resolution that protects your rights and your future. I never let personal pride get in the way of what’s best for you.

I believe that open and honest communication is the foundation of every successful attorney-client relationship. I pride myself on being accessible, responsive, and upfront with my clients.
